Contact UsWhen a finance leader searches this, the results mix two different debates: whether to use a staffing agency or an in-house recruiter, and whether to put an accountant on your own payroll or bring one in through a staffing partner. This article is about the second one. It compares hiring an accountant in-house against accounting staffing, with a third column for the model most US teams end up evaluating anyway: a dedicated nearshore accountant from Latin America who works your hours. Sixteen axes, the published numbers behind each, and a rule for deciding.
Three sources, in this order. First, what the pages that rank for this comparison actually measure, so the axes match what buyers are weighing: cost, control, ramp time, mis-hire risk, compliance. Second, published prices and timelines from providers' own sites, recorded in September 2026, never copied from another comparison. Third, Vintti's own placement data for the accounting roles that appear in the tables, taken from the published cost guide, plus the questions that come up in Vintti's sales research with US finance teams. Where a number is an estimate, the table says so.
Across the 16 axes below, in-house hiring wins on four, accounting staffing wins on nine, and three depend on the size of your finance team. The axis that decides most often is time-to-hire.
An in-house hire is an accountant on your payroll: you post the role, screen, interview, make the offer, run onboarding, and carry every employment cost from benefits to severance. If the hire does not work out, you absorb the search again.
Accounting staffing is a dedicated person who joins your team full time and reports to you, sourced and vetted by a partner that also handles the contract, payments and replacement. In its nearshore form the accountant sits in Latin America, in your time zone or within two hours of it. The partner is neither an accounting firm doing your books nor an employer of record selling you a payroll platform: it recruits and staffs, and you run the work.
A third model shows up in the same search and is worth naming so it does not get confused with the other two: outsourced accounting, where a firm takes over the function with its own team and you buy an outcome rather than a person. That is a different purchase, covered in
the comparison of finance and accounting outsourcing companies in Latin America and in outsourced CFO: what it costs and when a dedicated finance lead fits better.
Each row states what is published or measurable, and which model it favors. The nearshore column uses Vintti's published placement data where it exists and says "not published" where it does not.
Cost figures are US fully loaded monthly equivalents and Vintti LATAM placement medians from the published 2026 cost guide. The recruiting fee range comes from staffing and recruiting firms that publish it, from 15% to 35% of first-year salary depending on the model.
Salary is the visible number and the smallest part of the gap. A US staff accountant carries payroll taxes, benefits, software seats, equipment and a share of office and management time, which is how a base salary becomes a fully loaded cost near $6,167 a month. Add the search: an internal recruiter's time or an agency fee, and the weeks the seat sits empty during a busy close.
The staffing rate is one number that already contains the person's compensation, the partner's fee, payroll handling and replacement. For a staff accountant hired nearshore, Vintti's median placement is $1,650 a month, which is 73% below the US fully loaded figure. For an accounting manager it is $2,950 against $9,417, a 69% gap. For a bookkeeper, $1,800 against $4,750, or 62%.
The role-by-role matrix, with the sample size behind each median, is in nearshore staffing costs in Latin America, 2026 guide. The salary side of the same comparison is in staff accountant salaries, US vs LATAM and accountant salaries, US vs LATAM.
Both models need the same 30 to 90 days for a new accountant to own the close. The difference is what happens when the hire is wrong. In-house, a mis-hire at month four costs you severance, a second search of 8 to 12 weeks and another ramp. With staffing, replacement is part of the service: Vintti's staffing plan includes free and unlimited replacements, and most nearshore providers publish either a window (60 to 180 days) or an open-ended policy.
There is a second, quieter risk in the in-house route: the search itself. Vintti's sales research with US finance teams keeps surfacing the same situation, a controller or CFO without enough volume to justify a full-time US hire at a six-figure salary, but with too much recurring work for contractors at $150 to $200 an hour. That is the gap accounting staffing was built for, and it is where the comparison stops being about cost and starts being about whether the work gets done at all.
In-house, the answer is simple: you do, under the labor law of your state. With accounting staffing the person is either employed by the partner or contracted through third-party payroll services, and the contract, payments, local benefits and tax filings sit with the partner. You direct the work; you do not carry the employment liability.
Two things to check before signing, because providers are inconsistent about them. First, ask in writing who the legal employer is and under which country's law, since some sites describe the same service as "contractors" on one page and "we become the legal employer" on another. Second, if your accountant will touch client data, ask how access is granted and revoked. For US teams the IRS classification rules matter when a nearshore hire is contracted directly rather than through a partner:
IRS guidance on independent contractor versus employee status sets out the tests. Vintti's own guidance on this is in how to hire a nearshore F&A team without an EOR.
Buyers assume staffing means less control. Operationally it does not: the accountant works in your systems, attends your close meetings, and reports to your controller. What you hand over is control over employment terms, which is precisely the part most finance teams want to hand over. What you should not accept losing is the ability to interview and choose the person. Vintti presents 3 to 5 vetted candidates and you decide; some providers assign from a bench, which is a different product.
A US in-house accounting search commonly runs 8 to 12 weeks from posting to start, and that is before ramp. Nearshore staffing partners publish shortlists in 3 to 7 days and hires in 14 to 21 days. Vintti's process is a kickoff call on day one, candidates presented from day 7, and an 18-day average to a signed hire, with about 2 to 3 hours of your team's time invested per hire.
For a finance team that loses a staff accountant in March, the difference between a mid-June start and a late-March start is a full quarter-end close. That gap alone decides the comparison for many teams before cost enters the conversation.
A lot of what buyers fear about staffing is really about offshore staffing. An accountant in India or the Philippines works 9 to 13 hours ahead of US Eastern, so a same-day question gets a next-day answer, and someone ends up working at 3 or 4 in the morning to overlap. Finance teams that have lived that describe the toll on performance over time.
Nearshore removes the issue: Argentina, Colombia and Mexico sit 0 to 2 hours from US Eastern, Colombia matches Eastern time and does not observe daylight saving. Vintti's comparison with the Philippines is in why CPA firms are leaving the Philippines for nearshore LATAM.
Role pages with placement data: hire a staff accountant, hire a senior accountant, hire an accounting manager, hire a controller and hire an FP&A analyst.
No. Outsourced accounting means a firm does your books with its own team and you buy the output. Accounting staffing gives you a dedicated person who joins your team, works in your systems and reports to you, with the partner handling recruiting, payments and replacement. Vintti does the second, and does not sell the first.
Some are, some contract the person through third-party payroll services, and many describe it inconsistently. Vintti recruits and staffs; it does not sell an EOR or BPO service. Ask any provider to state in the contract who the legal employer is and under which country's law.
A US staff accountant runs about $6,167 a month fully loaded. Vintti's median nearshore placement for the same role is $1,650 a month with the fee included, a 73% difference. For an accounting manager the figures are $9,417 against $2,950.
US searches commonly take 8 to 12 weeks from posting to start. Nearshore staffing runs 14 to 21 days; Vintti averages 18 days, with a shortlist of 3 to 5 vetted candidates in about a week.
No. The accountant works in your systems and reports to your controller or CFO. What moves to the partner is employment administration and the replacement risk, not the direction of the work.
Under Vintti's staffing plan, replacement is free and unlimited. Other providers publish windows of 60 to 180 days or open-ended policies; a few publish nothing. It is one of the first questions to ask.
Usually yes. Vintti offers flexible buyout options; several providers publish a conversion or buyout fee. Ask how it is calculated before you sign, not when you want to convert.
For transaction processing, less. For a close, a reforecast or an auditor's question, a same-day answer is the whole point. Nearshore Latin America works 0 to 2 hours from US Eastern; offshore Asia works 9 to 13 hours ahead, which is why so many US finance teams that started offshore are now comparing nearshore.
Staffing, for the elasticity: seats can be added ahead of the season and reduced after it without layoffs, and a replacement does not restart a 10-week search in February.
Send Vintti the role and the hours you need, and you will get a side-by-side against your in-house number within a week, with candidates included. Start at nearshore accounting staffing.
In-house wins when the accountant has to be local and permanent and your hiring function is fast. Staffing wins on cost, time-to-hire, replacement risk and scaling, and nearshore staffing wins on those without giving up the shared workday that offshore takes away. The decision usually turns on one question: how long did your last accounting hire take, and what did the empty seat cost while you waited.
Vintti's comparisons with individual providers, such as Vintti vs Hire With Near and Vintti vs TOA Global, go one level deeper on terms. Everything above comes down to one question: what it costs to hire Latin American talent for a seat you would otherwise fill in-house.
